9th September 1943, Roger Sector, Yellow Beach, the Fifth Army lands in Spineta Nuova (Battipaglia)

At 3.30am the Avalanche operation begins and the Allies attack the Nazi enemy on the continent for the first time. Unlike the landing in Sicily, for the first time the Italians are no longer opponents, indeed the landing was preceded by the announcement of the armistice signed in Cassibile.

The front is as wide as the entire Gulf of Salerno with small landings on the two wings of the deployment in Maiori and Cilento while the bulk of the soldiers touch the ground between Pontecagnano and Paestum.

The bulk of the troops, 100,000 British soldiers, landed on the right of the Tusciano, on the beaches of Battipaglia in the Spineta Nuova area. The city becomes one of the main objectives of the dispute between the allies and the Germans. Contingent opposites occupy and lose it several times.

In one of these alternations, a group of English soldiers find themselves hidden in a house in Battipaglia occupied by the Nazis.

In the following image, taken from the famous book by Ugo Pesce on the Avalanche operation, the indications on the places of the landing  can be observed.
